I love my 55-300 DA L. Would rather have the newer WR version but will leave that for the future.
If you aren't in a hurry watch in your area for a used SMC Pentax-FA 100-300mm F4.7-5.8......if you get lucky you should be able to pick one up for under $100 and I enjoy mine a bunch. It also has an aperture ring, so you can use it with cheap teleconverters....a fun lens for learning and playing with reach....

For 189 bucks (APO version) with free shipping it has been a surprisingly useful lens once you master it's limitations, which is true of any gear...

I did just win a 100-300 vivitar lens on ebay ( for $32) so I have something to play with while I put aside the cash for the 55-300.
