What is this thing (extension tube?)

I got it in a job lot of old camera stuff and initially thought it was an M42 extension tube. It isn't.

Female threads (lens side) accept Leica lenses but not M42.

Male threads (camera side) do not fit either of my Leicas, nor does it fit Pentax screw mount. They appear to be 36mm oustide diameter.

I find no markings of any kind.

Help! and thank you in advance.

There's a few different threads. I think M37 was a popular one.

I don't see a picture but it sounds like it may be the (Swiss 35mm) Alpa extension tube--an adapter would then go on each end--one for camera and one for lens.

Actually as I recall now the Alpa has male on both ends. w/o photo it is hard to say much--I thought of Alpa b/c it has no marking on the tubes.
