If you haven't removed the rubber eyecup from the viewfinder then a rear lens cap hooks on very well to the viewfinder and I find it covers it sufficiently well for most situations. The only issue is when shooting with the camera pointed at an elevation more than about 60 degrees as the lens cap will then fall off.
I still use a lens cap, even after discovering that I have the proper cover, because it is quicker to place/remove and it doesn't need the rubber eyecup to be removed either. It is also more difficult to lose, simply for being larger.
