approximately US$15 - Sima quick release. At this price, every photo device and every support has one side or the other. My oldest unit is pushing 30 years, so it may be plastic, but it is obviously durable. The one on my monopod has been to three continents multiple times. The round shape of the support side of the release doesn't catch on the interior of bags or cause bruises if it bangs against you in transport. I've never tried, but the camera side of the release looks at least close to the semi-standard Arca tapered edge square.

I even have a Sima release attached to a waist belt when I use a long cross-body camera strap. It prevents the camera from swaying and bumping into anything while moving, yet releases in a moment to bring the camera into shooting position.

Sounds like a fun challenge!

Under $100:
--------------------------------------
Besides my marriage license, I think this category is evenly split between Domke straps, B+W filters, Fuji Acros film, and a bottle of Adox Adonal.

--------------------------------------
$100-$150:
--------------------------------------
A used Pentax 645 body. That started me on my love affair with Pentax medium format -- hands down the best value in medium format systems.

--------------------------------------
$751-$1000
--------------------------------------
Pentax K-5, purchased new. I'm convinced it's the same model God uses when He gets really inspired.

--------------------------------------
Over $1000
--------------------------------------
I have spent >$1000 on lots of photographic stuff. Interestingly enough, however, in retrospect I don't consider ANY of it worthy of the money spent.

*$100-150

DA-L 55-300. I bought it when I returned to my photography hobby. The 2 lens kit + K-r package deal only cost a little bit more than the body alone. The 18-55 lens is quickly replaced by many of us but the 55-300 remains useful forever. The DA-L 55-300 is a great blend of IQ, size, and cost. Yes, there are better lenses in terms of IQ, but they cost much more and are larger.

Here's some of mine:

*Under $100 - The Sigma 75-200 f/3.8 Autofocus. My most-used long zoom for sure. Cheap, sharp, and pretty fast.
*$100-150 - Toss-up between the a Lowepro Pro Messenger 180 AW camera bag and the MeFOTO BackPacker
*$601-750 - First DSLR, Pentax K-r. Kind of long in the tooth these days and the AF makes me want to kick it out a window sometime.

$100 - $150 - F 50mm 1.7. Was my main lens until I purchased the one below. Love the bokeh, often I go for that if I need a do all lens.

$601-$750 - my 31mm 1.8. Love everything about it.

Over $1000 - lift kit and bigger tires for my jeep to take me off the beaten path on photo adventures. I know that doesn't fall in the categories suggested, but having a vehicle to travel places specifically for photography adventures has been one of my best purchases/upgrades.

Under $200: My $149 brand new Honeywell Pentax H1a with 55mm f2 Super Takumar in 1965. It was the start of all the other money I've spent on photography in the years since. None of the rest gave me as much excitement.

Funny thing is I've never paid more than $100 for anything photography related, except for my *istDS, which I bought from my dad for $500 way back.

Best buy was 3 "A" lenses.

28mm F2.8
50mm F1.7
70-210mm F4

All 3 cost about $100, so $33 each say.

The 28 is great for landscapes and architecture, the 50 is sharp as and great for low light, and the 70-210 is sharp and does everything from macro through to distance.

This isn't about your "best deal". We have a best deals thread...somewhere. This is about stuff you bought, new or used, that is still commonly available & was worth its price. No ultra rare stuff that you stumbled across an uninformed seller & "stole it".
