I don't think the OP had that type of equipment in mind.
So sorry! This is what happens when I should be sleeping, something seems very funny at the time! Although it is kind of related since I now can divert some funds to photography purchases!!
To make amends I will post a proper list later!!

It was funny, don't worry. I'm very thankful you didn't post photos of your money saving surgery

I'll play! Some of these were good deals, but I'm thinking more in terms of the OP's sense of a good value. I.e., these are items I wouldn't sell, and I'm glad I bought them.

*Under $100
*$100-150
  • DA 50 f1.8 ($110)
  • DA 35 f2.4
*$151-250
  • Tamron SP AF 90mm f2.8 Di Macro ($245)
*$251-400
*$401-600
  • DA 18-135 - for as much as I use it, it's a great value
  • K-30 body
*$601-750
  • K-x kit w/ DAL 18-55 and DAL 55-300

In defense of the Jeep parts and tent posts...there's a very good reason for the saying, "f8 and be there". I've always said that if you want to take pics that nobody else has, you have to be willing to do what nobody else will do. With a Jeep, that may mean driving into places most folks can't get to. With a great tent, it could be staking out a spot that the motel folks won't see at sunrise/sunset.

I thought this might be fun. It's interesting to see what other people have found to be their best value for the dollar they spent. Guideline: needs to be relatively available in the new or used market. Nothing discontinued 25 years ago & rarely seen. Discontinued, but super common to find is ok. No software. Hardware or resource material only.

Here's our price breaks:
*Under $100
*$100-150
*$151-250
*$251-400
*$401-600
*$601-750
*$751-1000
*Over $1000
In the 400-600$ range, I actually got my K-30 for 420$. Switched from being a Canon User, and now am into Pentax!

Under 100$, Apart from the every day finds, I also got a flawless Tokina 90mm F2.5 AT-X Macro at a thrift store for 30$! Best Deal EVER! I'm always in thrift stores looking for good deals!

This is a list of things that have been incredibly important to me as a photographer. None of them were great deals but I have used them more than enough to make the costs negligible. I will only list 2 lenses although I got better deals on others.

A50f1.7 ($80) - I really like my DA40 but A50f1.7 photos look a little more special
CIRPOL and 3 stop ND filters ($100ish)
tripod ($250ish) - this really changed by photography - this is also light and compact so I take it everywhere
K200D ($325 used) - this got me started
DA15 ($525) - this and the DFA100WR go with me everywhere
K5 ($1100ish) - the body upgrade was great 2 years ago

For me, in the *$601-750 range, a used 16-50 DA* was my best buy. I use it 90% of the time and it works great as a bad weather/fast lens and gets fairly wide at the 16 mm range.

That would be my lumix shoulder bag - sooo small & handy (but big enough for my K-5 and an extra lens) and very little "camera-bag-like"

*$100-150
A mixed bag of used pentax equipment, including the M 100/2.8 and the K 35/3.5

*$151-250
A used * ist DL - or was this actually the blunder of my life? I bought it just out of curiosity to see how my old K-mount MF lenses would work in the digital age. Up til then, I was happy with my compacts. After that, I was hooked on Pentax DSLRs and lenses.........

*$251-400
The O-GPS1 with it's Astrotracer function. Painless geotagging AND a portable tracking unit in one. I have spent countless, fun hours under the night skies with my O-GPS1.

*$401-600
Nothing really special

*$601-750
Nothing really special

*$751-1000
Nothing really special

*Over $1000
Unquestionably and without any doubt my K-5!
