Yeah, the DA L versions don't come with a hood. I guess the idea is to keep it cheap. And so you can buy an overpriced hood separately. Luckily, there are pretty good knock-offs available out there; and third party generic hoods, too. The genuine or replica knock-off is pretty good, as it mounts via bayonet, so you can still mount filters, and it has a hatch for polarizing filters. From China/ebays it will cost under $15, but the shipping can take a loong time

I wonder more about the DA 35mm f2.4 and DA 50mm f1.8. Those could also use a hood, and I don't think Pentax even makes a dedicated hood for these? (and buying a hood for the FA 35mm/FA 50mm is very expensive, plus the hood is made for FF, so I assume it could be tighter on crop).
If you go to the Ricoh/Pentax website they list the optional hoods for those two lenses, search for those numbers in ebay and you'll find the cheap knockoffs.

Lens Hood (Option):
Plastic Square-edged Spring Type (PH-SA49)
Rubber Round-shaped Threaded Type (RH-RC49) - See more at: PENTAX DA 35mm F2.4AL smc PENTAX DA 35mm F2.4AL

HOOD: RH-RA 52mm (optional)

My only complaint was the sorry excuse for a rear cap that came with the two lenses. Both fell off immediately after the lenses were removed from their packaging.
Those push on caps are nearly useless, fortunately knockoffs of the good caps are cheap. I'm not fond of Tamron rear caps either so they get replaced too.

My DA L 18-55 came with a hood, the DA L 55-300 didn 't (both lenses in the same kit deal from B&H)

my 18-55mm WR also came with a hood. I suspect those that are not receiving hoods with there kits lens may be victims of gray market sales or buying return items sold as new that may have been returned without the hood.

My thought was more along the lines of somebody buying a Pentax kit, taking a few pictures in direct sunlight, deciding they don't like the quality and returning it in favor of Nikon or Canon.

It's kind of like how Apple builds customer loyalty by doing all those little things that maybe add a few cents to the product, but really make them stand out from other manufacturers.

Plus lens hoods are a great place to plaster your logo in really big font.
Apple still puts crappy headphones in the box with their iPod. Anyone who cares about audio quality is never going to plug those things in. Similarly, with a kit lens a lot of people who give a damn will never even use them or will buy the body only.
