Depends what the kids are doing what what the light condiitons are
The DA 35mm f2.4 is also a good choice, and it a wider angle, so you don't have to be as far (good for indoors).
One other popular choice is the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens (make sure its "for Pentax" - K mount). It has a similar zoom range as the kit lens, but much better low light performance. Its a good "everything" lens.

If you are doing Kids portraits with that lens I suggest no flash, f2.8-3.5, 1/90 or higher and let the iso be the vairiable that changes.
