K5 firmware update - Is this safe ?

I am seeing a few "crashes" reported here when trying to update the latest firmware(s) for the K5, K7, etc ...

Is this here: New Firmware Adds Support for Pentax Teleconverter - Pentax Firmware - PentaxForums.com
the right and safe place to go and download/install the firmware (K5) ?
I have the fwdc209b.bin (taken from the link above) on my computer and ready to install ... but I am a bit leery about what is going to happen.

Thanks,

JP

I downloaded and installed the K-5 firmware 1.16 from Ricoh Imaging with no problem. Just my two cents.

I was a bit leery as well, but tried it and worked fine. It's strange how the US Ricoh site only has firmware up to 1.14....

I'm quite sure that those crashes don't relate to the firmware itself but to a camera problem that already existed before the upgrade; this camera problem causes the installation to fail, rendering the camera useless.

But to comfort you, I've just done the install on the K5 and the camera booted afterwards. Phase 1 takes approx 30 seconds, phase 2 possibly 90 seconds.

I've done a MD5SUM for the bin file: 2e704f1c72fc5f503d7719d74818fc92
You can use it to verify that the file is not corrupted; it's (obviously) valid for both the bin file extracted from the EXE as well as for the bin file extracted from the ZIP.

// Edit:
By the way, PentaxForums links to downloads on the japanese site (at least for the K5).

Those are all links to the official Japanese Pentax download site. The files uploaded there and on the US/other sites are identical, so you're good to go.

The most recent version of K-5 firmware is 1.14 on both the Ricoh Imaging USA and Ricoh Imaging Canada websites. No sign of 1.15 or 1.16 on those two websites.

I downloaded 1016 from the Ricoh USA site for the K-5 several days ago with no problem. Not sure why Pete isn't seeing it.

Oops, the page starts with the Version History, which counts backward from versions 1.14 to 1.01. Versions 1.15 and 1.16 should be at the top of the list right? Not in the strange world of Ricoh Imaging USA. They are at the bottom of the page.

How exactly do you proceed to do this MD5SUM for the BIN file?
You should be aware that I am totally useless with anything "computing" unless guided step-by-step !

In Windows, I use digestIT 2004 . Once installed, you will find an entry in the context menu in Windows Explorer. Right click on a file, select digestIT2004 and you have option to calculate or verify.

When you choose calculate, typical output looks like
QuoteQuote:
2e704f1c72fc5f503d7719d74818fc92 fwdc209b.bin
The first part is the MD5sum, the second part is the filename.

When you choose verify, you can use the md5sum that I posted in the earlier post (it was a copy of above MD5sum) and paste that in the verify window. Click OK and a while later it will tell you if it succeeded or not.

In Linux I use the command line.
