Off brand batteries and firmware updates

No. But that doesn't mean there aren't bad third-party batteries out there. Always check reviews before picking one up.

Thanks Adam, but I was wondering about whether new firmware updates are putting limitations on non Pentax batteries as what is happening with Nikon and their 3000 and 5000 series.

Does Nikon have more than just + and - contacts in the camera? I can't see how Pentax would limit something like that, as long as the voltage is right there is no way for it to know the battery is third party. I really can't see Pentax doing it with the K-50/K-500, they allow AAs.

Good point with the AAs. I'm liking my Pentax more as I read this forum. Thanks all for your comments.

I haven't seen Pentax do that....yet. Nikon does and so do some other manufacturers. My Nikon D5100 has that limitation, but, third party manufacturers are decoding their batteries, and the ones that are decoded will work in spite of the restrictions.
