K-50 and bar scale

I like shooting with old (screw mount) lenses. I have no trouble using the bar scale on my K-01, but my K-50 is another story. Aperture ring enabled, manual mode, manual focus, manual ISO. Changes to shutter speed are shown on the display, but not reflected on the bar scale like they are on my K-01, making exposure a gamble. In live view there is no bar scale at all. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

You mean the exposure meter indicator, right? If so, the camera won't meter exposure until you press the green button.

Do you have the depth of field position on the power ring, spring loaded from ON? If so, in your menus, set the preview to Optical rather than digital and hold that over to bring up the scale. Then use the edial to change the exposure to what you want. That's how it works on my old K10D. The viewfinder will darken because this stops the lens down to the aperture you or the camera have selected.

Canada,
The K-50 doesn't have the depth of field preview position on the power switch anymore. If you want DOF preview, you have to assign it to the RAW/Fx button. You can assign optical or digital preview, but you
still have the right idea. Page 265 of the K-50 manual, bottom of page, all lenses, M mode, states:
" Pictures can be taken with a set aperture value and shutter speed. [F--] appears for the aperture indicator. The exposure can be checked with Optical
Preview

Good catch!

Thanks, grog. I use it all the time with my two M lenses, so it popped right up to the top of my head. Different button, same effect.

Different camera! I have a friend with a K-50 and the dynamics of using non-A contact glass is quite a bit different than on our K10Ds.

Green button metering isn't reliable on the K-50 if you're using a screw-mount lens though. Unless you're in Live View then it will always choose a shutter value of 1 over the ISO (unless your lens shorts out the proper contacts on the mount): https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/151-pentax-k-30-k-50/250198-using-k-mount...ml#post2672234

(Supposedly a bit of foil or conductive paint applied to the mount will fix it, but I haven't tried.)
