Was the other lens a SDM lens?

The only thing I would suggest, is trying the defective lens with another Pentax camera body. Maybe the OP's K-3 is defective?

The other lens is not a SDM but have one coming tomorrow I can try before I ship his back I guess

If it is still not working, you might consider taking to United Camera in Bensenville. They will give you a repair estimate. This might be used to assert your claim for a refund or return.

Greart idea but he has agreed to take the item back I have another SDM lens arriving today and will make sure it is not the new K3 body before returning to him

Hey guys it is definitly the Lens just got a new 50-135 SDM that works like a charm
This lens is DOA 16-50
