You are so right, I did not realise this either but the computer parts supply vendor I purchased the PU from told me some real horror stories. He said I was lucky to have discovered the faulty (worn out) PU in time because a little further down the track It could have even fried some parts including HDDs.
Not saying the OP should immediately replace the PU as indeed it may not be the culprit but having it checked out wouldn't hurt
