Actually, PSUs are cheap components in otherwise expensive computers and can be responsible for quite frustrating and/or intermittent errors, especially if dust has built up over time. The problems can even resemble those of bad RAM.
You are so right, I did not realise this either but the computer parts supply vendor I purchased the PU from told me some real horror stories. He said I was lucky to have discovered the faulty (worn out) PU in time because a little further down the track It could have even fried some parts including HDDs.

Not saying the OP should immediately replace the PU as indeed it may not be the culprit but having it checked out wouldn't hurt

Greetings.

Not in my case, the system could see the drive but I could not access it.
I should have said usually.

As for cheap power supplies, that's why I build my own computers so I don't have "cheap" PSUs in them. But you're right a psu problem could emulate any many of other problems.

Why burn CD's these days?
If there are only a few small files that fit on a half size CD but are too big to e-mail. They are easily Snail Mailed. Also all DVD burners are backward compatible to burn CDs and DVDs are not always required for a small job.

Greetings
