...and I am pretty sure that the banding is a result of the reduction to 8 bits/channel.

I have no problem with your post, Imageman, and apologies are not needed. You had the interest and decency to try to help me resolve this problem and for this I'm grateful to you

As many have alluded to here I think the problem was that Faststone RAW conversion was was set by default to import and work on low res files to increase process speed. I have altered the settings which means longer launch and process times and the banding seems to have disappeared. I would be disingenuous if I pretended I fully understood what I was proffering as an explanation but hopefully I can now settle down and enjoy my new acquisition. Thank you all for your help. An example of what I now get, A view of Dartmoor, at the back of my garden.

Glad you got it worked out. It is always best to work on large files until you are finished with your PP work.

BTW...Nasty Gorse in the foreground.

I think people probably felt you spent a lot of time proffering instead of listening, but I'm sure everyone's glad it's worked out.

Oh dear, Clackers, do you think so? I'm afraid I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to understanding these things so I will take your reprimand in the spirit it was given and remove myself to the back of the class until I can get my ears syringed.

Apologies are all mine, Dartmoorman - it's me picking up papers in the schoolyard for penance.

I've mixed you up with the guy in the Sky Posterization thread.

Same reported problem as you, but without your grace and sense of humour!

Lot of that going on around here

It is really funny how technical questions seem to cluster. We can go for a couple of years without a "sky banding" (or similar) question on this site and then get two or three in a couple of days.
