My K30 arrived today. I unpacked all the stuff that came with it and went to attach the lens (18-55) which came with it. following the directions, I lined up the red dots and the lens would not turn. I tried everything...applied moderate pressure, no pressure, a slight gap, tight to the body. Nothing. Very frustrating and since I purchased it on amazon, returning it will be a pain. Is there something stupid I am missing?

To be honest, I've never heard of anyone having issues mounting the kit lens before, which means that hopefully there's nothing wrong with your gear

Can you post a photo of the back of the 18-55mm lens as well as the lens mount on the camera? We should be able to tell just from that.

The normal procedure for mounting a lens is to align the dots, push the lens all the way in so that it's flush with the camera mount, then turn your hand clockwise so that the center of the lens lines up with the prism housing/flash on your camera.

yep it is! A couple of things seem a bit odd. First of all there a three little screws on the lens that have a small piece of metal between the screws and the lens body causing them to be raised just a little. Also there is a small metal flap on the camera body that is bent down. it is located just under the red dot. I don't know if this is normal or not.

Could be an olympus lens. From memory they will fit into the mount but not turn.

Not the precise kit, but pretty much identical. the lens is a Pentax

Look for some bits and pieces in either the camera mount, or the lens mount. There could be a broken piece of plastic, one of the items might have been installed at an angle instead of flat etc. All in all, I think that it would be fair to have it replaced by mail.

Do you mean this (see photo)... If yes, this is normal, it's the grounding contact for the lens.

And from your pictures, your 18-55 is damaged, it's missing the contact pins and there is visible damage around the screws. IMO this lens was dropped while attached to a camera...

How is returning on amazon a pain btw? You just put it into the box it came in with a printed label. It's very easy.

And this is what the back of your lens should look like, I marked up the area where your lens shows damaged or missing piece (screw-drive, contact pins)

It appears that the lens has been messed with. I don't see the screw drive in it's hole nor are the balls for the contacts apparent in the shot . There is also damage around the screws Here is a shot of the back of my 18-55

Fgaudet posted while I was typing. He may have it correct in being a dropped lens On camera ,as the damage would be consistent with the damage shown.

Looks like someone else took advantage of Amazon's easy return policy and returned their destroyed lens. Does the serial number on the lens match the one on the box?
