Compatible Flash gun

I have a old (15yrs) Cobra 480 flash gun dedicated at the time with all pentax camera, anyone know if it will be ok with a modern pentax DSLR.
I know flash guns in general fire a small voltage signal back to the camera, so I am cautious.

The voltage is likely fine being a TTL flash, but it won't be very useful on bodies newer than the *istD series. Looking at pictures of one on an eBay auction I don't see any manual controls or old auto mode so it will likely just fire at full power every time.

Hi, welcome to the Pentax Forums!

Compatibility depends a lot on the original capabilities of the flash.

The first thing to determine is whether the trigger voltage is safe. This can be measured with a volt meter across the center contact and the contact on the side of the shoe. Under 15v is probably safe. Pentax flash units are under 10v, center post "+" polarity.

Your flash may very well work with with current Pentax P-TTL flash automation since that technology dates back to about year 2000 on the MZ/ZX series cameras. This is where the flash user guide is your friend. It will show what features were supported and also how the flash was intended to be used with compatible Pentax cameras.

I would love to help more, but it is hard to find information about your flash. This is complicated by the fact that a similarly-named unit (Cobra 480AF-P) has been recently offered on Amazon and other places. That unit does not support P-TTL and will operate essentially as a fully manual speedlight on a P-TTL camera.
