Even fog will penetrate a lens ... avoid any wetness under pressure, meaning a few light drops on a calm day are not likely to be as damaging as a rain shower with wind. Wipe the lens exterior dry as soon as possible. And the really important item - store the lens in a dry environment after use. If you also had your camera bag out in the damp, it is probably not where you want to put your lenses, even if you didn't actually use them in the damp environment.

And should the Zip Lock baggies come into use ? Dry your lens thoroughly before the next use or there will be other problems if you don't.
Use a rain hood and treat your glass nice....WR or Not !
I have a couple Sacrificial lenses just for rain.....if they get ruined..."so what"...... they only cost a few bucks and the shot is saved !
Its better to ruin a $5-$25 lens than something really nice and expensive.
I still treat those sacrificial lenses just as above.......NICE !
Get a rain hood/cover and use it !

It's so easy to tuck a small plastic bag in your pocket or camera case to use if it rains suddenly. all you have to do is cut out a hole in the bottom of the bag, large enough to just slip over the end of the lens. If your lens has a hood, all the better!
