Great Value Suggestion

I purchased a carbon fiber Velbon Neo Pod 6 years ago for a ridiculous discount while I was working at bestbuy. It is very light and solid, but I would never pay full price for it if were buying again. If you want a good bang for your buck, you might want to try this combination Dolica G100 Pistol Grip Head and DOLICA WT-1010 - 61'' Ultra- Premium Professional Monopod (select heavy duty option). You can get both for about $100. I have a Dolica GX600B200 tripod and have been very satisfied with it and the ball head that came with it. You get a lot for your money if you compare them to the Manfrottos, Giottos, etc. I would gladly trade in my Velbon for this combination. The pistol grip head will give you great versatility and will also work on any tripod you own or purchase in the future. I plan on purchasing the pistol grip in the near future to go with my monopod/tripods.

Thank you for the suggestions. I ended up going with Sirui P-326 with a Oben Tilt Head. Got it in the other day and planning to use it this weekend. Can't wait.

Question using monopod

Oh 1 question. Is it recommended to turn off the shake reduction while using the monopod? I know you should for tripods, but now sure for monopods since they're not as stable as tripods.

I don't turn it off, usually because I forget.
Congrats with the new Sirui, you made a good choice IMHO.

tilt head sort of defeats the purpose
Not if you want to take a portrait/upright shot while still mounted on the monopod.

I like the Manfrotto 334B Automatic Monopod. Just push the trigger and the leg drops. Its a bit pricey though.
