Do I need to update firmware?

I have a k10D and a k100D. Both work perfectly, which is more than can be said for the photographer

I'd never heard of firmware updates until recently, so obviously these cameras have never had theirs updated.
Do I need to do this?
If so, is there a guide to how this is done? I gathered from what I read that it is somewhat tricky. Especially when the author referred to extracting something called a bn from an exe, or something like that. (The writer was talking about a PC. I have a Mac and don't know any more about PCs than a hog knows about Christmas.)
I use Lightroom or iPhoto for processing the photos, if that matters at all.

The firmware update guide is found here:
Pentax Firmware Update Guide - Pentax Tutorial Videos - Pentax Camera Forums

If you've haven't experienced any issues with your camera so far, I wouldn't worry about updating your firmware, especially if you're not a computer person. Generally speaking, firmware updates add minor features and bug fixes rather than new functionality or performance enhancements.

There are mac versions of most updates. If you have a computer savvy friend who can help out, it only takes a few minutes. Otherwise, as Adam says, there's probably nothing crucial in them.

By the way, the most recent K10D (V1.31) and K100D (V1.02) firmware updates are at Software Downloads : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING for both PC and mac. Click on the links and you'll see what fixes or enhancement were introduced for each update (they are cumulative, so just install the latest to get the lot). Instructions are also displayed.

The cameras are working perfectly so why do you need to fix them.

Don't do it.

Well, I always update for the simple reason. There is always the disclaimer on the K-30 that says:

Changes to V1.06

  • Correspond to HD PENTAX-DA AF REAR CONVERTER 1.4X AW.
  • Improved stability for general performance.
  • *Contents of [Version 1.05] and earlier version will be also updated.

Now I am not sure what that "Improved Stability" really means but if it is an improvement in some sort, I will take them up on that. In some instance I do notice an improvement when updated, but in most, no real change is noticed. I know that on one of the older revisions, I did see a slight improvement on AF speed so I am always happy with a benefit. .

The OP said the cameras are working perfectly, wheres this improved stability your suggesting he could get?

And if it destroys the camera and makes it useless without a 300 dollar repair will you still be happy he upgraded the firmware?

I worked in IT as a technical support expert for many years. It was never a good idea to install firmware upgrades unless absolutely necessary. Look at the number of posts on this forum from photographers who upgraded their firmware to leave a useless pile of junk because the firmware upgrade failed and the camera wouldn't even switch on afterwards.

If a firmware upgrade fails, and lots of them do, its irreversible and the entire motherboard inside the camera has to be replaced at the factory.

If the camera is faulty and a firmware upgrade will fix it by all means upgrade.

If the camera is working perfectly and theres no reason to upgrade don't do it.

The OP has cameras that work perfectly. It makes no sense to upgrade. Call me an idiot if you like, but I don't like taking perfectly good equipment and pointlessly changing it and risk destroying it. I might as well take my 300 dollars and throw it on the fire as do that.

And I work for IBM and we always do regular updates, as do all the companies I have worked for in the Silicon Valley. To each, his own. Upgrades are meant to be fixes, they don't give them out for no reason at all. Improved Stability could be many minor fixes that are added but they are not referenced to be so small to not warrant in documentation. I am sure Thiokol should have had an update prior to the Challenger exploding but maybe they thought that upgrades weren't that important.. Each person should choose on their own but I always update because they are given for free and for a reason. Now if someone feels that they do that they are uneasy about a simple update fix in their camera, they should not do it, but it is not rocket science. It is everyone's choice but you as a Tech Support guy say that you don't ever do bug fixes and updates seem not the status quo.

Thanks to all for your replies. I'm a firm believer in if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if it can't be fixed with duct tape, WD 40 or baling wire, then I should leave it to the pros. So I'm leaving things as is!

The K100D firmware update says it allows use of SDHC cards. I would consider doing that one just so one day, the only SD card you have dies, and you can't buy them anymore. Since you need an SD card for the update, you'd have trouble. The K100D doesn't really need the extra SDHC capacity, however, and otherwise the updates don't fix a lot. If you have lots of old SD cards, the disaster scenario is unlikely.

The K10D had a lot of firmware updates but you could do them as issues occur. It appears to have been SDHC compatible from the start.
