Sigma 100-300 compatibility issue

Hello All,

I have an issue with a Sigma 100-300 F4 APO IF lens that was purchased back in my MZ-S days. The lens is like new and only ever been used two/three times at the very most. Having left the lens sat in it's box for several years (I went elswhere when I went digital - I still use my 645 and 67 so all was not lost) I sold the lens on EB'y recently, HOWEVER the lens would not autofocus with the buyers K5ii and I took the lens back.

Having just put fresh batteries in my MZ-S I have discovered the lens works perfectly!!! I am know wondering - is there an age related compatibility issue with my lens and modern digital bodies? Anyone know?

Thanks for looking.

G'day Pat

I have the 100-300 f4 and have used it on K10, K20, K5iis and K3 with no issues.

Regards

I'm wondering if the K5's AF/MF switch was set to MF...

There should be no compatibility issues with a Pentax digital using film era lenses. Occasionally a third party lens may be fidgety with some cameras but that's really rare. More likely the contacts need cleaning on the lens and the buyers camera, or buyer's remorse.

Have used my Sigma 100=300/4 on two K20's, two K5's and now two K5IIs's. Also works with Tamron 1.4 & Kenko 1.5 TC's. This was most probably operator error. The camera AF was in M or the lens was in Manual or the camera body contacts were dirty. If I don't wipe contacts clean periodically, none of my lenses, screw drive or SDM will work.

I recently sold a K-5 and recommended the buyer get a Tamron 28-75. I got a phone call, it wouldn't work. The lens wasn't in "A". Problem solved.

You should have no problem selling this.

Thanks for the swift replies.

The buyer had his own lens with his body and that was working fine. We did try manual/auto switching but couldn't get the Sigma to operate. I didn't have batteries for my MZ-S at the time so couldn't show that the lens worked.

I should have included "EX" in the description of my lens.

I have an older (film era) sigma APO 70-200/2.8 EX. And I find that occasionally when going from my PZ1 to my digital bodies it occasionally won't AF because the screw drive does not engage. The PZ1 seems to park the drive at a different angle, causing the drive not to align with the lens screw. I know it sounds stupid, but it should ortherwise work

Pat. Where are you located, perhaps there is a forum member nearby that can bring their camera and try the lens out

Yesterday I got a Sigma 3.5-5.6/24-70 UC from eBay.

I put it on my *istDS, and AF did not work. The usual procedures did not help.
Then I tried it on my K200D, and it worked alright!
After that, no problems anymore on both cameras, I made lots of test shots with both of them.

I think this may be related to a long time the lens was not used. Moving parts might get stuck, and need some more force the first time they are used again.

After using it with the MZ-S, your lens now may also work again on digital bodies.
