Sigma EF-610 Super not firing on K3

Hi,

I recently got a used Sigma EF-610 DG Super from ebay for my K3 so I could shoot graduation this weekend. Unfortunately, I'm having issues getting the flash to fire on camera or perhaps even detect that it's on camera. Otherwise, the flash is in great shape.

To detail the situation:
  • The flash will not fire regardless of what mode it is in on camera EXCEPT for wireless slave off-camera with my built-in flash triggering. (It also fires its test burst no problem)
  • I've tested in Manual at the proper settings (in range of normal sync for normal flash, in HSS range for FP [Sigma's HSS] flash), and in program auto and green mode. Nothing
  • The hotshoe connections look fine and act springy. I've plugged a Yongnuo manual in and it triggers just fine (albeit I believe it uses less pins)
  • The flash does not change zoom ranges for my 18-135 DA WR or my DA 50
  • If the flash is turned on, then attached to the camera, there is no change on the screen of the flash.
  • The camera, in auto modes, will not change exposure as it would for the pop-up flash. In fact, for slow exposures, it will flash the flash indicator (indicating that the pop-up flash should be used).

It's those last 3 points that have me suspecting that there might be some issue with the connection. I've never used a sigma flash before, so I could be missing something obvious. So my question is, does anyone have any ideas? Any tests to perform?

Thanks for your time.

As an update, I have tried the "paperclip" test method as outlined on another forum: I touched a paperclip to both the ground on the hotshoe and to the center pin on the flash to no result. Does that mean that the flash is defective?

It sounds bad contact yes. Are you keeping the shutter above 1/180?

Yep. Tried shutter speed above and below the sync limits--no avail.

If the paperclip method doesn't work, you've likely got a broken wire inside the flash to the hotshoe mount. Shouldn't be hard to fix if you're handy with a soldering iron.
