Difference between Pentax flash and third party

Are there any advantages to the Pentax flash compared to third party flashes?

The newest Pentax flashes are weather-sealed (AF-360FGZ II, and 540FGZ II) and have lots of direct, physical controls (buttons and dials). The older models (without the "II") have the same controls and are on sale right now.

Third party flashes (Metz, Sigma, etc.) that are "P-TTL compatible" are generally going to provide the same light and performance, without the weather sealing, and (in the case of Metz) with fewer physical controls and harder to navigate interfaces.

Assuming you want to use P-TTL for automatic exposure, and have access to special flash features like High Speed Sync and such, your source for information on Pentax-compatible flashes is here, thanks to our own MattDM:
The Definitive Guide - Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison

If you just want a basic flashgun with an on/off switch and a slider to adjust power, then there are lots of very cheap, all manual (camera can't control them) flashes out there. In general, only go this route if your budget is severely limited or you really know what you're doing with flash. P-TTL is quite helpful, and the higher-end flashes can grow with you as you get better and start experimenting.

The third-party flashes may need a firmware update at some point to stay compatible.
