I don't know that most pros do select images in the camera; it seems that it wouldn't be very time-efficient.
Agree, time on site is expensive and limited. And if you are working with models even more expensive.

Also a not perfect shot is clearly better than no shot, and all that time you spend staring at the LCD is time you are not spending shooting

No, the OP is exactly on the mark. You can mark good photos for the keeping in camera with my 5DMK3. ...
I didn't know that. A nice feature to have.

I must admit with SanDisk cards being so cheap nowadays, I tend to keep everything apart from the total "cock ups", until I can view them on the big screen.

On site is the place to create good shots not identify bad ones.

Some instructors have told me that deleting files in-camera significantly increases the risk of messing up your card (and thereby rendering all of the files useless). I'm wondering if that's true.
Regardless, I don't try to select or delete files in-camera.

The only time I delete in camera is when the bird I'm taking a picture of flies out of frame and I take a picture of an empty tree...

Most of the pros I know use PhotoMechanic to quickly (and I mean, super-quickly) cull through a session's worth of shots to tag and rate prior to editing in LR and PS.
Thanks for this Jim, I'm impressed by what I see and will install the trial!

Thank you to everyone for your input.
Didn't mean this to turn into a discussion about labeling when and where, or whether you're an idiot for wanting to pick a photo in the field or while viewing it on a tiny screen. Personally I love the screen on my K3.
The photographer I mentioned marks his photos when he sees a shot he really likes. The example he was telling me about was when he was shooting the NCAA finals for the newspaper he works for. His work is damn good and he manages to feed his family as a photographer so whatever he's doing must be working.
I don't delete anything. After 3 years and over 100,000 images on my K5, hopefully my error rate has improved.
I'm currently shooting a K3. It's everything I'd hoped my K5 would be.
All I want to do is have a button I can hit to say-"Check this one out, it might be good" when I'm editing my photos later.
It doesn't look like there's an efficient way to do this though.
Thanks again to everyone for your input.
Keep Shooting!
