ist DS

Hi all,
I have a ist DS. Yep, I know it is old tech now, but there is nothing wrong with it and the lens is very good. One question, the 1GB sd card says there are 333 photos left to take, but if I insert a 32GB sd card it says 999 capacity. which of course is only 3x the 1GB card. I have updated the firmware to ver 2.01.
So.....does this mean that the ist DS cannot be updated any further? I am a little concerned that because of the above the camera is not reading the larger card properly so I therefore do not feel I can trust it.

I also have an Optio RZ18 (great little camera) and that has no problem telling me that I have 10355 photo capacity at 16meg pixels!

I am not worried about displaying the full capacity so much as losing important pictures......

any help/comments greatly appreciated.

if you take a picture, does it stay at 999, or go to 998?

999 images might be a firmware limitation, not sure. I can check on my *istDS when i get home

999 is simply the maximum displayable image count. It really means '999 or greater'.

The *istDS originally supported only SD cards, 2GB max. Later firmware versions added support for SDHC, but the frame counter limitation remains.

...and a 32 GB card may or may not be compatible since many are SDXC.

Thanks

I appreciate your replies, no I did not try to use it, I just assumed that 999 was an error......
I will try today and report back, the 999 counter limitation sounds very possible so hopefully my fears are unfounded, I have just bought a Toshiba wifi card for my Optio and I was hoping to use the Optio's old card a Sandisk 32GB "extreme" SDHC in the ist.

It is fine

Just tried the 32GB card in the ist, the counter stayed at 999 but the pics were fine.

Thanks for you help again.

Using 6MP images on a 32GB SD card - you have storage for 15,200 images. Even with a 2GB SD card you have room for around 950 shots. The cards are quite inexpensive now - You can shop for the lowest / reasonable price, or price per gb.
  • 2gb cards for about $5
  • 4gb cards for about $5-$6
  • 8gb cards for about $4-$7
  • 16gb cards for about $10-$12
  • 32gb cards for about $16-$20

Wifi card does not work

After all that the Toshiba 32 GB Flashair wifi card arrived. The Optio RZ18 just cannot see it at all.....the only menu option is for an Eye-fi card, I tried one of those, not only did it not do what it was supposed to but they flatten the battery in no time. Anyway, the Optio simply thought the Toshiba card was just a ordinary SD card. My Samsung S3mini phone could "see" the wifi card but as the camera was not talking to anything there was simply no communication between the two.
The wonderful idea I had was that as I took a picture it would be uploaded to my Dropbox immediately.....nice idea but the technology is not here yet!
So the Tosh card is winging it's way back to wonderful Amazon....at least I get a full refund without any quibbles....and here in darkest France that is a big bonus.
