can't import photos

I am renting a K-5, trying to decide if I want to switch from Canon.

I plugged the K-5 into the computer with iPhoto pulled up, turned the camera on.... and it did absolutely nothing. The camera and computer behave as exist each other do no exist. Typically when I plug a camera in, it shows up in iPhoto and asks me if I want to import the photos.

please help me get these photos on them computer.

P.S. an SD card reader is not an option.

How old is your Mac? What version of OSX and what version of iPhoto? Most Mac laptops have built-in SD card readers...

You need at least iPhoto '11 in order to read the raw format of the K-5.

Make sure the camera USB connection mode is set to MSC and not PTP. (wrench menu 2)

Start the Image Capture application. Connect the K-5. Look at the bottom left corner that lets you configure the behavior of the Mac when the camera is connected. There is a drop-down menu that gives you choices.

Image capture doesn't detect a camera either. Im thinking I'll just go buy a card reader.

Have you tried a different USB cable? I have a few cables that are charge-only, no data. I really should throw them away as I'm always getting them confused with data cables...

I I have one cable with multiple adapter heads. It works with my 50D, but that is a different adapter piece.

I might as well buy a card reader since I only have the one cable anyway

Yes, a card reader is pretty much a requirement for a photographer these days. Get one with a thousand and one card input options, you never know what you'll need for your self or a friend.
