K3 and the Flu Card O-FC1

Hi,

I have a wonderful Pentax K3 DSLR and I've just bought a Pentax flu card pro O-FC1 to go with it (it's in the post). I hope to use the card to tether my K3 to a laptop so that I can do some astrophotography with my K3 mounted on my telescope, this will require using the live view remote control capability of the card/camera. Does the O-FC1 card work with Windows 7 running Chrome or Firefox? My phone is a BlackBerry Z10 running BB10.2 which can emulate android most of the time, has anybody tried to remote control a K3 from a BB10.2 phone? And finally, I've also got a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, has anybody successfully controlled a K3 via a O-FC1 from a PlayBook.

Any help would be appreciated, but if I manage to get it to work I will post back here.

Thanks, Nick

Chrome on Windows should work (works here), but BlackBerry OS is a crapshoot. It kinda works on my old BB browser (not 10) but LiveView never updates - I need to keep pressing the refresh button. I've since gotten an Android phone, and that works much better... I think you can get an Android app emulator for BB10 on the playbook, right?

I tried it on a Z10 and it worked fine. Any modern browser should support the FluCard as it's a rather basic interface.

Thanks both.

Thanks both for that info,.

A Canadian who dislikes BlackBerry is a bit like a Brit who hates Aston Martin or an American who hates Hershey Bars surely?

I have a BlackBerry Z10 phone so this is very encouraging news, I also have a couple of web browsers on my PlayBook so I will give them a go. The key capability is the use of my laptop (Win7) to control the camera, I want a nice big screen to check the focus if I'm imaging a galaxy or other DSO (Deep-Sky Object). I recently got a lot of stick from a friend who criticised my choice of Pentax claiming that real astrophotographers only use Canon DSLRs, I hope to prove him wrong.

I will report back how it goes, the card should arrive tomorrow. It was an American who once described residing in the UK as "a bit like living in a Tuppaware box", this has more than a grain of truth to it where I live on the Welsh/English border, but the grey cloud and drizzle does clear from time to time to let the stars peep through.

The O-FC1 arrived today (thanks Amazon) and I've had a very quick play with it in my K3.

The results so far:

Z10 BlackBerry phone........ works fine, only comment is that you only get to see the live view image if the phone is in landscape.

BackBerry PlayBook ............. No go! For some reason the PlayBook can't obtain an IP address from the the flu-card. I'm going to do more investigating but it's not looking good.

Windows 7 Laptop .......... Works well so far, using a mouse/cursor rather than your finger to select an AF point is not a problem.

So far so good. :-)
