Vivitar lens won't mount to k10d

I just got my k10d from eBay today. I was extremely excited to put my Vivitar 75-205mm but I can't seem to get it to lay flat in the mount. It seems to be the result of a metal protrusion in the rear of the lens.

What gives? What is the purpose of this protrusion? Can I safely remove it?

The shield/flange is there to protect the aperture stop-down lever. The shield can be removed or trimmed down. On some models it is just held on with screws. Other models you should remove the rear mount and cut down the flange.

There are numerous posts on how to fix this:

You should buy a JIS driver or two as a Philips screwdriver will likely strip out or damage the screws.

Are you sure it's a K-mount Vivitar. My 75-205 F3.8 mounts fine on the K10D

Same concern here - I've got the same vivitar lens and been using it on my k100d with no problems. I'd be very surprised if the k10d isn't identically built for k lenses(!). Try googling some images of lens mounts to make sure you have a k mount.

The problem isn't confined to the K10D - it exists with any body with the power-zoom contacts include film bodies. The third party lenses with the flange problem were produced before the Kaf2 specifications were released.

Maybe this topic can help. Get a dremel (or a new 75-205 with a shorter flange). https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/186451-vivi...ing-k-5-a.html

I had few of those vivitars with large flange. Did use sandpaper, it was about 20 minutes work only to make flange small enough.

The interference is with the SDM contact block which did not exist on the K100

A common problem w/ (some) Vivitar lenses. You should remove it (usually 3 screws)--only then should you cut it down, or just leave it off.

Yes, I'm 100% sure. I was just shooting this with my Pentax ME Super last night.

Thanks for the post. I found my precision screwdriver set and popped it out without a problem. I'm going to file it down the next time I get a chance to work on it. Thanks for the help! I didn't know what that thing was called.

My fellow Pentaxians!

I am happy to announce that after going to the hardware store, buying a file, and grinding that sucker down for about half an hour, my lens now mounts to my K10D perfectly!

I overdid it, and now the flange has absolutely no shield, but it fits and that's what really matters.
