High speed sync

Hi all. This should be a short thread. I heard of the yongnuo speedlite flash guns but am I right in thinking you cannot flash sync at fast shutter speeds? ie above the flash sync speed. Also, is there an alternative to the pentax flash units that do allow high speed sync? Thanks in advance.

Not sure but I have a Metz 58 AF1 and that has HSS as I think a few of them do.

Yes. For example Sigma EF-530 DG SUPER.

I encourage you to visit this page about flashes for Pentax SLRs:
The Definitive Guide - Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison

Very informative IMHO.

The Sigma EF- 610 DG Super has HSS, however it will not do HSS in slave mode. It is the replacement for the EF- 530 DG.

You are right. Yongnuo flashes that work on Pentax are manual only, so do not support HSS or slave modes or other camera-model-specific things like P-TTL. Yongnuo makes flashes for Canon and Nikon that *do* support these, but only for those camera models.

As a few others have mentioned the Metz flash units will let you do HSS. I have the 58 AF-2 but I believe the older AF-1 as well as the 52 will do it as well.

Hi All. Thanks for your help. The Sigma 610 super looks the favourite at the moment. Bound to be better than my Vivitar 283's. I'll start saving soon.

Update... Since I have an Sigma EF 610 DG super which does HSS on camera but not as a slave I have found out I can use it in HSS and trigger a Pentax AF540FGZ HSS in slave mode so checking KEH I found some good prices there so I picked two up. The Sigma I consider to be a really decent relatively inexpensive HSS capable flash that works very well, I have no complaint outside of it not being able to work off camera HSS in slave mode, care does need to be taken with the battery door and diffuser though. You might consider starting off with a good condition used AF540 GZ. That way if you add to it with other HSS capable flashes you can still utilize off camera Flash HSS as a slave.

I may be reading my EF-610 DG Super manual incorrectly, but it has instructions for HSS using wireless PTTL (p20). I will have to test this to see if it actually works.

What I have found is (FP) HSS will work when it is on camera or on camera P-TTL wireless in control mode (CL) to trigger a slave mode HSS capable flash such as the Pentax 540's or 360's. If using an HSS compatible wireless trigger setup it works in CL mode only or with a P-TTL sync cord but when turned to slave mode (SL) FP is not able to be activated. If there is a way to activate FP in SL mode on the 610 I sure would like to know how to get it to work.

If your referring to this part on page 20. I don't know what camera they are talking about has this option or the ability for the on camera flash to work with speeds higher than 180.

Promaster 7000m has HSS. Assuming the 7500 does as well.

Looking at the manuals neither have HSS capability Also the Ftd 7000M is a film zoom and could potentially cause damage to a digital camera..

My understanding is that HSS is when the flash pulses before/during/after the exposure. Is that correct? In that case the flash does have a sort of manual HSS. Manual because you trigger the flash yourself meaning the SYNC part might not always be there.
As for damaging my DSLR, I've tested the trigger voltage and it's no where near the dangerous level.

edit:
if you have a newer pentax, don't bother with the promasters. The camera's hot shoe won't even trigger them.
They work fine on my k100 and worked on the k10/20 but my k5 won't trigger. k7/k-r seem to have the same issues.
