I was going to suggest pretty much exactly what you did. Maybe you could order a broken version of your lens on eBay and cannibalize the parts?

You have to find somebody who has been repairing lenses for ages, they usually have something that will fit.

Have you seen those wrist bands that seem to be all over the place? They're selling on eBay as an anti-zoom creep device for five bucks a pop, but I got one of them from my local community college and just slapped it on my Vivitar. Maybe if you could find one of those in black. Or turn it inside out? I find that the red and black on mine looks pretty schnazzy.

I have seen them , was wondering what their DIA was ? The 50 F4 is a rather small lens ...

Go to your local sportsware store and get some grip tape they use for hockey sticks or tennis rackets.

I used to buy bicycle tire inner tubes and cut to correct width as finger protectors for pulling crab pot ropes. Black, strong, stretchy. And one inner tube lasts a long time!

I use adhesive vinyl embossed to look like black leather.

Will one off a M 50/2 work? Not sure if it is the same diameter, but if it is, M 50/2's are CHEAP and plentiful. Especially ones in rough shape on fleaBay.

Somebody was looking for suitable replacement material on one of the Yahoo manual focus lens groups. He than talked to a lens repair guy who had a whole drawer full of grip rings scavenged from old lenses. Found him a suitable replacement in no time flat.
