Can I use my K1000 as a light meter?

I just recently purchased a Bronica ETRS, and it has a non metered prism. With that said will, my Pentax K1000 work sufficiently as a stand alone meter for a medium format camera?

Yes, you can use your K1000 to meter a scene. The area metered will be the area of the viewfinder image with a slight weighting to the center. Better would be a hand-held meter allowing both incident and reflected readings and even better would be the meter prism or a spot meter.

sure, your iphone will work equally as well with a 1$ app.... remember to put the cap back on the k1000 after each meter or the battery will drain!

Very interesting question.

I can not see any reason why not, except that it will be a very roundabout way. I think the K1000 has a centre weighted meter and you will have to transfer the shutter speed and f stop settings that you get with the appropriate ISO set to your Bronica.

The format should make a diference

I have used my K-50 to do it. No reason you couldn't use a K1000 to do the same. You might find a hand-held meter to be more versatile and easier to store in the bag with the Bronica.

Thank you.

I really don't want to spend money on a meter, or a metered prism for the Bronica.
It should fine for my application, mostly still life and some portrait work in the future.

I use the Pocket Light Meter app on my iPhone. It's free if you don't mind ads (still full-featured, though), otherwise it's $1.99. It's intended to use the Luxi clip-on to use the front-facing camera for incident light metering, but I found that the translucent body mount cap from my K-50 works for the same purpose.

FWIW, I have had poor luck with the light meter apps for Android (can't speak for iPhone). The Android apps work by extracting the EV from the exif on a test exposure*. Unfortunately that often does not translate well to other cameras. I have found the phone metering to vary several stops from my hand-held and SLR meters. As always, YMMV.

Put a long lens on it and you've got a spot meter.
