Incorrect remaining shots counter

I have a K3, with a sandisk extreme pro 32GB sd card in slot 1 and a sandisk extreme 64GB sd card in slot 2, the remaining shots counter always shows 598 and 1196 respectively, if I calculate each DNG raw file at roughly 30MB the counters should read 1066 and 2132 respectively. Indeed the counters do drop by 1 for every 2 shots taken (approximately). Does anyone else have this problem ? an it be cured ?

The used space is not exact due to file structure requirements so actual space available for shots will be less, but it does seem weird that it is so far off.
The camera does some estimation of remaining shots due to file sizes varying as well.
Did you format each card in the camera?

Yes, I see the same effect regardless of where the cards are formatted, but I always format in camera, on the basis that the internal formatting software must be the most compatible. I suppose itīs no big deal as long as I know to double up the number remaining. Just wondered if anyone else had this big a discrepency- Itīs interesting that there is no variation in this effect, its always the same. I save adobe DNG raw format, to fill card 1 than move to card 2.

Hmmm. I shoot mostly JPG and it is pretty accurate, maybe a RAW shooter has another idea, sorry.

The counter is only and indication on minimum amount of shots that can be stored.
The camera use largest possible file size for each image quality setting for calculating remaining storage on the memory cards. The average file size can be much lower.

According to the K-3 manual it use 54MB image size (37 images on 2GB memory card) for calculating remaining shots using RAW.

It's only at high ISOs that your raws will be considerably larger than 30mb, so most of the time you'll get a lot more shots than the theoretical minimum. Try shooting the same scene with various ISOs and note what happens to the filesize

Just shows it is possible to learn something new every day. Here in a land of plentiful sunshine, (Andalucia, Spain) I do not take large numbers of photos at any ISO above 100 so I have never noticed the difference. Equally, I did not know that it made any difference either. Many thanks for letting me know.

Does the sharpness of the lens affect the size?

Only theoretically. The uniformity of the scene can have an impact, however. In extreme cases, such as when shooting the moon, your files may end up unusually small.

Only theoretically.
It does in practice. My RAW files from say the DA35 Macro Ltd are always bigger than those from other less sharp lenses.
