Numbering issues

I have an issue with numbering. At work we use a system of photo registers and other records which cross reference our photo numbers. When we download we batch renumber the files based on the following system: project number/download/file no.

On the K50 is there any way of showing how many photos have been taken in a folder, or at the least how many are the SD card? On previous cameras we've used, they've always been able to show a simple number sequence (eg 1,2,3,4) so keeping our paperwork in order was easy. However on these pentaxs they only seem to display the Image Number which can be different from our numbering sequence if photos have been deleted (eg 1,3,4 rather than 1,2,3).

I hope that makes sense.

Good Morning and Welcome to the forum!

This topic has come up from time to time, and is described in a number of different ways. Basically it comes down to two different numbering systems, one absolute rooted in the hardware, with the second (file label number) can be controlled by you.
  • The first one - the frame or image number is the incremented by one for each shutter activation and is recorded in the images EXIF. This can be displayed with a number of utilities like PhotoMe (free download). The user has no control over this value - other than by pushing the shutter.
  • The image label - The user does have control over this value (well indirectly). Its made up of two parts - the prefix (that you the user can specify, something like "IMGK5"; and the postfix, which is a incrementing value. Usually this is set to 1 on the body at the factory. However, this can become reset. Consider this example SD card A, you shoot 20 images (IMGK50001 through IMGK50020), pull the card and put in SD card B. You shoot 5 images (IMGK50021 through IMGK50026). Then you pull SD card B and put SD card A back in. This is where things get reset. The body senses that the the next label you want should be IMGK50020+1 or IMGK50021. You have inadvertently reset the label counter. The key is to always insert an empty card with no images on it (or to reformat the card prior to each reuse after moving the images off to your PC for post processing and storage). The way to reset the number is to rename a file on a SD card to be one less than the starting number you desire. Insert it into the camera body and take an image. You can also sync up the two numbering system in this way.
I can't tell you why they did this or what problem that they were trying to solve. It clearly is a reset scheme. Its probably different from other vendor's methods. But, it is what we have.

Hope that helps....

Yes. In playback mode, zoom out completely until you see the folders:

The number in the upper-right corner is the file count.

As for the file numbers the camera chooses, there's a menu option to reset the sequence number to 1, so you may wish to do that at the beginning of each day.
