Pentax ME super shutter problem?

Hey all,

Two weeks back I got myself a Pentax ME super online, but after finishing two rolls and getting them developed I was struck by a problem, dark area in pictures taken at high shutter speeds. I looked through the forums and found some other cases of this problem but I am not sure how to approach/tackle this problem. As additional information I have uploaded an album with explanatory pictures.

Album: Pentax problems - Imgur
1. (Three examples of the) Problematic pictures
2. The shutter blades have a little sticky spot on it (probably one of the causes?)
3. The blades do close
4. Another point raised in another topic is that the mirror bumper could cause the problem as well, mine is deteriorated as well

What's the best thing to do first, look for an expert or start by replacing the bumper/light seals?

Thanks for taking a look,

Jurre

Almost certainly a dragging first shutter - so that the closing shutter catches up to it. If you are in the USA I'd send it to Eric Hendrickson for fast reasonable service.

Thanks for the quick reply, sadly residing in the Netherlands so that's gonna be difficult. Is it a procedure that can easily be performed by local (specialised)repair shops?

If you are using a flash, make sure you set your shutter speed accordingly.
Also, the ME Super is a very common camera. Unless you are particularly attached to the one you have, replacing it may be more cost-effective than having it serviced.

This is so true. The electronic shutter on the ME Super is less serviceable than a fully mechanical unit. Replacement with one off a parts camera is the preferred option. A rule of thumb with all but professional cameras of that era is that if they work (very likely), they will keep working until they are worn out. Once worn out there is little that can be repaired. Maintenance consists of keeping the camera clean and avoiding damage.
