Vivitar teleconverter

Hi all,
I've just bought a vivitar teleconverter with electric pins for automatic aperture and it just does not work properly. It does move the aperture when checking the depth of field using the on off switch, but there is no information visible on the lcd panel on top. I cleaned the pins, even inside, I unscrew the panel etc, but no results. The mount on the camera side is black, I've read that might be the reason, due to the paint covering it. Would it be?
Would anyone have idea what is happening?
