Autofocus on K20 with kitlens is not working

It continually seeks (running down battery) but never settles on the focus. It used to work okay (but never great.)
Any ideas before I just return it for service? (Warranty has elapsed.)

Hi,
Welcome to the Pentax Forums. Does AF work with any other lens and are you able to confirm that the focus mechanism is actually engaged (subject appears in/out of focus)?

If the kittens are continually moving the focus can try to follow them. It can take a little while for the focus to lock in. If the subject has moved, the lens needs to focus all over again. Can the lens focus on a stationary point?
Experiment with the focus mode AFS or C and the focus zones, centre, selective or pattern.
Low light can also impede focusing.

While I had my K20, it would start hunting in the late afternoon, when I thought that there was more than sufficient light - but the camera thought otherwise. I would go out and try again in full sunlight and see how that works, then progress from there.

Focus is supposed to hunt continuously in AF-C mode. Try switching the autofocus dial on the front from AF-C to AF-S.

For photographing kittens, I would recommend a 135mm lens over the kit-lens.
Which kit-lens? Are you indoors and set to widest aperture?

Thanks

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I am working with a 18mm - 55mm kit lens... (not shooting kittens :-) I'll remember to spell that out next time.
Fortunately the problem seems to have gone away for the time being, and the autofocus is working again.
