Do I need to buy the FA31mmf1.8 if I have the K28mmf2?

I am tempted to buy the Pentax FA 31/1.8. However, I do have the Pentax K 28mm f2. Is it justifiable to get the FA, if the 28 is really good?

FA 31 substitute

Cannot answer since I have not used either of the two lenses. However, I can empathize with the question. I have the Sigma 30 ff f 1.4, which I purchased as a sort of vaccination against LBA for the FA 31. The vaccination has not worked entirely, however, as I still catch myself watching prices and thinking about the FA 31. Eventually, I will relent and buy it, first time I have the cash in hand!

I guess it depends on how much you want auto focus and a little wider aperture. You can also look at photos with the two lenses and see if you can see differences in rendering. The FA 31 is a little more resistant to flare (newer coatings), too. But only you can judge what the differences are worth.

Good point. I do not mind the manual, in fact, I only use manual mode in wide angle lenses. I do not see much flare in the K28/2. However, I will check.

Of course you do... feed your LBA at regular intervals.

I've put the need to buy FA31 to good use: I ignore tempting offers of anything else in that focal range.
The only problem with that line of reasoning are tempting offers of FA31.

I bought the 35 2.4 to prove to myself I didn't need the 31 ltd. I hardly ever use the 35, I'm still convinced sooner or later I have to have the 31... go figure.

Same with the Sigma 70 macro, it wa supposed to stop me from wanting the 77 ltd. Guess what, that didn't work either. I love the macro, use it all the time, it doesn't matter. The 31 and 77 just have that Pentax thing that you would have to buy Pentax for, even if you didn't like anything else.

I'll trade you my FA31 for your K28/2. Then you'll know.

Just to be sure, you are NOT talking about selling the 28mm in order to finance the 31mm, correct?
If that is the case, I'd say go for it. MF is ok, but for me can be a pain and cumbersome.

But if you want to sell the K28mm, I wouldn't do it.

I caved on the 31 a couple of years ago and haven't ever regretted it, even a little.

When it comes to pentax AF lenses it isn't possible to find a substitute for the FA31 limited - it is a unique lens.

I guess I have an affinity for the 28 to 31 range. I have the 31. I like it, I use it, I reach for it, and best of all its AF!!! I also have the K28/f2's little brother, the Contax Zeiss 28/f2.8 Distagon. I also like it, use it and reach for it. Additionally, I have the Leica 28/f2.8 (that I am getting ready to put on the marketplace) along with the K20/f3.5 Shift. I have way toooooo many 28's. I also have the new Zeiss 25/f2.8 ZK (I could not afford the ZK28).

Knowing what I know about the 31, if I didn't have it - I would probably go for the 31. If the CZ28/f2.8 had AF - it would be a long hard struggle, trying to justify the 31, but I would go with the 31 (there is really something extra there - even when compared with the CZ and ZK). I have found that the 31 and the K5 are made for each other.

The problem that you will have is, when you reach for a 28/31 lens - what will you pick up? For me - my eyesight has shown me that for longer focal lengths (100mm and beyond), my manual focusing days are over. I can still manual focus the CZ's (I have 2 - the 28 and the 85). I can still manual focus my Taks (50 and 85). Just the other day, I had to make a decision which lens to take to Walnut Canyon - I choose the 31.

If I could only have one and only one lens, then it would be the 31 - the color, contrast, rendering, sharpness, overall image quality - and auto focus.
