Question

I've recently been looking at a new pentax 100mm macro lens but they are a little on the expensive side. I have done the usual and spent about a million hours trying to find a decent second hand one (ebay etc). I came across this new Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di-II 1:1 Macro SP lens. Does anyone have any views on this? I want to use it for macro and portrait shots.

It seems to be a toss up between this Tamron and the wonderful SMC DFA 100 Macro 2.8. Reviews and owners love the both. I have the Pentax and it would be one of the last lenses I would part with. If you found a good price on a Tamron SP 90 F/2.8 Macro lens - in good condition grab it. You will not regret it.

I think the D FA100 Macro is the better lens, but only by a close shave!

The DFA 100 is also my favorite but mainly because that is the one I own. It also has the weatherization. But I have seen some wonderful work done with the Tamron.

I have the Tamron 90 and love it. Great portraits with this lens as well! It's been very reliable and always fun to shoot.

I really doubt that you can go wrong with either lens.
