My new AF540FGZ stopped firing

Hi, While at my photography class tonight on flash photography my flash appeared to die. It was working fine and then stopped firing. I changed the batteries three times with various types of new batteries and although the test button was lighting up and focusing, it would not fire. It seems you could see a dull strobe but nothing more. Do I have a lemon or am I missing something?

Of course, the first thing to check is the shutter speed setting. Too high and the flash may not fire.

Did you try to push the "test" button to see if it fires? Does the "test" button lit up when you have the battery inserted?

I did check the shutter speed and the TEST button was lit up but would not fire. Later when I got home it appeared the TEST button looked a little "sunk in" on one side. I flicked it with my nail and it seems to be working. Hard to believe it was that. I will monitor over the next week especially since it is still under warranty.

I find mine seems to shut down after heavy use. This especially occurs when it is used as the focus assist in dark situations. I have had mine for almost 10 years so definitely out of warranty. I just live with it

Pentax flash service menu?

I'll use that thread to ask:
Is there any 'service menu' in Pentax AF540FGZ flash?
I'd like to check number of fired flashes (i.e when buying secondhand).
AFAIK there is service menu in Metz flashes.

Actually if the button was partially sunk I believe it would display the traites you were describing, as the test would be effectively trying to fire a constant burst.

@lowell my guess on your issue would be the voltage from the batteries drops low enough to shut it down, but should "recover" relatively quickly. Flash guns are pretty tough on the poor little batteries.
