Auto-Tak 1:3.5/35 operation

I have obtained an early auto-takumar lens 1:3.5/35 mm lens S/N324359. I am thrown by the small metal trigger which can be easily depressed, and located where the A-M tab is usually located. I cannot figure what its purpose is - it seems to make no diffference in aperture or mo movement of ring. I wiould be glad if you could inform me about this so that hopefully I might use it confidently...

To use the semi-auto Takumars you set the aperture then pressed the lever to open the aperture to focus. When you triggered the shutter the camera pressed the pin on the lens to close the aperture.

A DSLR won't have anything to press the pin on the back of the lens mount. To use the lens on a DSLR, use the aperture ring to control the aperture. Focusing will be easier with the aperture fully open. If you want to shoot at a certain aperture, you can count the clicks between fully open and that aperture. Then open up, focus, stop down and shoot. Metering may work in Av mode with some cameras and some lenses.
