Got K3 Today....software doesn't work with 8.1 win

Good evening,
I got my K3 this morning with bundle 18/135 lens.
Very nice camera, grip and hand sensation.
I will study now the commands.
Onlyproblem, original Pentax/Ricoh software doesn't work after installed, blank launch.
Shall i use other programs; i don't like photoshop.
Picasa doesn't read file PEF.
Do you have suggestion?

Many thanks and again MERRY CHRISTMAAAS

Check the Pentax web site for newer software.
I don't think I ever used any of the software that came with the K-3.
I use LightRoom(PC or Mac) or Aperture(Mac).

Switch your raw format file to DNG and you may have better luck although it may still require a plug in for Picasa.

I also use Lightroom so don't have experience with Picasa.

You could try FastStone image viewer (and editor) - very highly regarded freeware

There is a free trial version of Lightroom you might try.
https://creative.adobe.com/products/download/lightroom

As others have said - DNG is the way to go for broad access to editing programs, easy change in the menus.

+1 for DNG.
And +1 for Lightroom though Faststone is also useful.

Use DNG instead of PEF file, I don't think you will lose anything but DNG files are friendly to other applications.

Aww, I installed it on my new hp envy desktop with widows 8. I am pretty sure it's 8.1. I have the Ricoh software, Adobe photoshop, and Lightroom 5 installed. I did have trouble installing the XRite Display Pro cd. I had to go to 'My Computer' and click on the drive and click the install exec to get it to install.

Yes, I agree. I use Windows 8.1 and no problems with Pentax software.

Same here. Not a single problem with Windows 8.1 on either my 32 bit desktop or 64 bit laptop. Make sure you have the OS updated but I can't see a single reason why your software would not work. I even use software designed for Windows 95 on my 8.1 machines and they run fine.

As others have said use DNG instead of PEF, as it's more broadly recognised by more third party software.
