KPS - Oopsie.

As an alternative I picked up the KPS Design magnifying eyepiece reviewed here by Mr_Canuck.

Or at least I though I did! Instead I bought the "UCC" version by accident, which is meant for you to provide your own magnifying lens.

Despite it saying "1.35" on the device, it actually comes with plain glass installed.

Don't make the mistake I did!

Here it is installed on my K-5.

And here is the packaging.

I don't use MF lenses that much, but find the magnification helps me to confirm critical AF lock visually. I have the Pentax magnifying cup on my K-3 and K-5IIs, and use a Nikon magnifying cup on my K-5. I also wear glasses, and the slight movement needed to view the info at the bottom of the VF becomes second nature with a little time, and is a worthwhile tradeoff for the magnified view IMO.

I believe the O-ME53 is a must on the Pentax K-r due to its rather small, dark viewfinder. When I got my K-30, I began to place the O-ME53 on my camera but decided that it wasn't really necessary, so it did not get attached. I love the K-30 viewfinder as it is. (By the way, I am a senior wearing progressive lens eyeglasses.)

Are the O-ME53 compatible with Pentax 35mm (film) cameras? (indicating compatibilty with the upcoming digital full frame) Does it give the feeling of a medium format (645) view finder?

Yes, all K-mount bodies except the K-1000.

There are 3rd party magnifying eyepieces. The reviews have the usually complaints about the universal adapters being flimsy, too loose or too tight. YMMV. Most of these are hinged and can flip up so you can see the entire viewfinder without magnification.

The earlier Pentax magnifiers are no longer in production. They also flip up and provide 2x. You can find them for sale in the usual used equipment venues.
Eyepiece FB and Magnifier M. I don't know if there is an "A" version - it probably wouldn't be any different than the M as at 2x you can't see the entire view finder.

These should fit on all the K-mount DSLRs. They will fit on film bodies too but may be loose on bodies earlier than the M series.

Since the Olympus angle finder fits the K-mount DSLRs I would imagine an Olympus magnifier would too.

I loved the O-ME53 on my K-x, but never used it on my K20D or K-3. The reason I never used it on the weather-resistant bodies is that someone posted that the magnifier fogged up on their K-5 in rain or snow.

I often shoot in wet weather. Does anyone know whether fogging is a real problem, or was it a freak instance?

Doesn't fog up on my K10D.

I should qualify a little. With one exception, all Pentax K-mount bodies accept the same viewfinder accessories. That exception is the K-1000 which has the same viewfinder as the earlier M-42 Spotmatic. My K-3 eyecup, for example, fits both my KX (1st generation K-mount body) and Super-Program film cameras.

As noted above, Olympus viewfinder accessories fit.

I just read the directions that came with the O-ME53:
  • Precautions For Use: Do not expose the lens to rain or snow

I'm going with my original plan and selling it.
