Advice: which lens...

Hi All,

After my recent purchase of the a K-5iis, 50mm 1.8DA & three manual lenses 35-75 + 70-150 + 55 f2 (M42).

I am the new family photographer

we had an occasion a couple of days ago, i couldn't shot with the 50mm any group shots...
so, I was looking for a wide angle lens with AF, found these three:

1. PENTAX - F 35-135mm f3.5-4.5 = 55$
2. SMC Pentax-F 35-70mm F3.5-4.5 = 63$
3. SMC Pentax-FA 28mm F2.8 AL = 150$

which one would you get???

Thank you for your time.....

The F 35-70 is often referred to as a "stack of primes" because its colors and IQ are very good. The F35-135 is also well thought of by its users. Of course the FA28 is a prime and they are ususally better from an IQ standpoint than zooms although not as flexible. Their reviews in the Lens section are listed below:

I'd go for the FA28 myself. That's a useful FL on the ASPC, but it's not a really wide angle, more a "normal" view. You can also look for a used DA16-45 which is nice for the price.

Hi,

It's a great thing to be 'the family photographer'!

I am guessing that you were not able to capture a group shot because your lenses didn't go wide enough. So, of the three candidates you list, only the FA 28mm would be wider than your next widest, 35mm. The FA 28 is a very good lens; I would pay $150 for one. Whether it would be wide enough for future group pictures depends on the size of the groups, I suppose. 28mm will not gain you a great deal in terms of wide angle of view compared to 35mm. You might need to go even wider, e.g., 20mm or wider.

A possible, affordable option could be a DA 18-55mm zoom. Or, if your budget allows, consider a DA 18-135 zoom, which is generally better than the 18-55.

Edit: I forgot about the DA 16-45. As mentioned above, it would be a good option, also.

- Craig

The 35-135 is an OK lens but noticeably heavy and awkward
The 35-70 is a really nice little lens with excellent IQ, that goes for very little money, but the focal range is already covered in your lenses. Personally I carry one almost all the time as a backup.
The FA 28mm is a nice prime and somewhat wider but is more a normal focal length and honestly does not gain you much over what you already have.

What you are missing is something truly wide on APS-C, such as the 18-55, or the 16-45. Given your price points I would get one or the other of these. They are reasonable in price and far more useful on APS-C than something like the 35-135 since you already have that covered.

Depending on the size of the group (and the room) but 28mm may not be wide enough. I would add another vote for the 16-45 if you don't mind the size it's quite big. I use an 18-55 @18mm for group shots, around 20-30 people but we're in a big room (martial arts studio) where there's plenty of space to zoom out with my feet.

Thank you ALL!!!
i haven't told you the whole story,
there is a wedding on Thursday, so i need the lens by then.
just did a search on line for available lenses nearby (Israel) by your suggestion, found none so far.
I do think i need an AF lens for the faster response.

Thank you all again!!!!

I would think the 18-55 would be available locally almost anywhere. It might not be the best lens, but it is good enough, cheap and AF.

If you need wider, right this minute, with AF and the FA28 is available locally then I say that's the lens for you. Good luck.

It's a descent lens and 18 is MUCH wider than 28 on APS-C. I'd go with it out of your local options.

You are looking at this wrong. There are no Pentax dealers anywhere near me either but there are lots of camera stores that used to carry Pentax with a bit of old used gear laying about. They will be delighted to see you Another source is pawn shops or second hand stores, not sure what that would be called in Israel.

But if you can get an 18-55 for that price, considering your time frame and budget, I would go with that for now.

If using the 18-55, try to avoid going to its limits. Try to use it at 21 or 24ish and stop down to maybe 5.6. For a kit lens it's a very useful tool, especially if you get a WR version.

A nice light cheap versatile lens that you don't mind breaking because it's easy to replace.
