Auto focus will not work on DA-18-270 lens and istDS2 camera

I received this great new lens as a gift this past summer and have tried everything to get the auto focus to work. I have two other lens for my istDS2 that work great. Does anyone have any suggestions? Even the folks at the camera store are stumped on this one.

Thanks!!

Mark

Yes, that's because the DA 18-270 is an SDM lens and you need to have a K100ds or later model, i.e., it won't work on an ist.

There is actually an article up on the PentaxForums home page about the K-mounts that addresses this...

The Evolution of the Pentax K-mount - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com

The part worth noting is this:
QuoteQuote:
Pentax KAF3, KAF2, and KAF lenses support autofocus and full exposure automation on Pentax DSLRs. Exception: the *ist D series, K100D, and K110D will not autofocus with KAF3 lenses.

Read more at: The Evolution of the Pentax K-mount - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com
In other words, the *ist is incompatible with the autofocus in the KAF3 K-mounts because it lacks the hardware for the newer lens. You'd need a camera a generation or three newer for the lens to work properly. (I want to say the K-20...)

The *ist DS2 has only the coupling for the old screw-type autofocus, with which the motor is in the body (Pentax *ist DS2 - Pentax K-mount DSLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications), whereas the DA 18-270mm lens has only the electrical contacts for the more recent in-lens focus motors (SDM or DC autofocus) position (SMC Pentax-DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database).

On the *ist DS2 body the coupling for the in-body motor can be seen on the stainless steel lens mount on the body at about the 4:30 position. On a lens equipped with the corresponding driveshaft, the coupling is on the stainless steel mount at about the 7:30 position (The Evolution of the Pentax K-mount - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com).

On the DA 18-270mm lens the contacts for the in-lens focus motor is in the black area enclosed by the stainless steel lens mount at about the 7:00 position (The Evolution of the Pentax K-mount - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com).

You won't be able to autofocus with that combination of body model and lens model.

The camera store staff has made its ignorance about Pentax gear painfully obvious.

Time to upgrade. Prices are pretty low right now.

The K-50 would be a great yet affordable upgrade over your DS2

Adam says it would be a "great" upgrade...
The K-50 absolutely murders an IstD2.

The K-30 and K-500 are two further cheaper alternatives, all sharing the same great sensor with the K-50. The k-30 and K-500 are no longer manufactured and can be found on the 2nd hand market at cheaper prices. Note that the K-500 is not WR, but the K-30 is like the K-50.

There are lots of alternatives which can be picked up used for a song. If you have an older TTL flash, it may need to be upgraded.

Hello,
Does anyone know if you can deactivate the SDM on a 18-270 and convert to screwdrive? (Or DC, which would be wonderful!)

It doesn't have a screw drive motor. There were only a few dual motor lenses released -- the DA * 16-50, DA *50-135, DA *200 and maybe the DA *300/60-250 (I don't own the last two). The 18-270 is actually a rebadged Tamron and it definitely only has one way of focusing, the in lens motor.
