K-10D Machine Gun Focusing

Hi Folks,
My K-10D out of the clear blue sky has started to "machine gun focus", that is when shutter the button is half pressed or AF button the lens begins to rotate back and forth no matter where it's pointed. It never stops or achieves focus until I lift my finger off the button. I have tried a couple of different lenses and it does the same thing.

I have removed and reinstalled the battery, cleaned the contacts all to no avail.
By the way, manual focusing works OK.

Any ideas if there is anything I can do?

It's kind of sad because it is our first DSLR and have had it since it came out. We also have a K-IIs but my wife likes the K-10D better.

Thanks,
Steven

Sounds like the AF motor is faulty. Maybe time for a service? Though it's an 8 year old camera, might not be worth it.

if the motor is faulty, shouldn't it stop altogether?

Maybe the AF sensor is dirty?

No, that would be 'failure'.

In an older vehicle I had a battery that was faulty. Most of the time it would start but a few times it wouldn't, and sometimes the electrical system randomly malfunctioned. The final straw was when I started the vehicle and got out to grab something from the house, and the electric door locks locked "by themselves". A new battery solved the problems.

I suspect that the camera is having trouble indexing the AF motor.

You said that manual focus works fine, by that do you mean focus confirmation as well? If so, the AF sensor is probably fine.
