Tamron 70-200 f2.8 - autofocus issue

Just purchased this lens and it has a fault out of the box. I'll call SRS about it in the morning but wondered if anyone had seen anything similar.

The lens will focus once then the camera switches to manual focus only. Turning it off/on won't work but switching to manual focus then back to auto sometimes will...for just once again!

When you switch the camera on it will ask you to enter the lens focal length, so it is as though it occasionally doesn't recognise it at all. I guess it's a faulty lens mount or something.

Tried on a K3 with latest firmware and a K20. Both same.

Anyway - assume it is just a faulty model but wondered if anyone had experienced similar. My tamron 90mm macro has always been great!

I had one for about a year. Used it quite a lot and never had a problem at all.

I suggest trying to clean the contacts first. that might fix your problem.

Thanks for replies. Yes, contacts nice and clean Promacjoe. Seems a good lens otherwise - hopefully can get it sorted without too much fuss.

I got that lens at Christmas and mine is working perfect so mmmm yes, looks like for some reason you got a bad copy, if is still on warranty you can send it to fix perhaps is a bad contact or something like that.

I got my T70-200 a little over a year ago and had to send it in three times to get the contacts right, in fact I sent the K-30 in with it the last time. Apparently Tamron service only had an ancient Pentax to use for calibration and it was off kilter. Since getting it back the last time it is perfect. I suspect they had the mount off a little and had to replace it. They are pretty quick with service.

I went through two Tamron 70-200s before my current one that works like a dream. The first was a refurbish and was just plain DOA. The second behaved somewhat like you describe, I just returned it for a replacement and the 2nd one has been great. Good luck.

I had the same issue with a brand new one that I bought. I tried cleaning the contacts and playing around with it to no avail. I had to send it back for a replacement. New one works great.

I've had mine for about six months, works great. This is with a K-5 II if that matters.

Thanks all for responses. The guys at SRS were fab in exchanging it. All looks good now on the K3. Definitely a faulty one but replacement is a nice sharp lens by the look of it - Great value for money lens if you don't need blisteringly quick autofocus for sports.
