K100 D - Focus But No Lock

It's been a while since I've used my K100 D but the snow this morning looked beautiful on the trees and I wanted to take some pictures.

But I am having a problem. My lens (44mm Limited Pancake) will focus just fine outside, but I can't get a lock on anything. I tried all the different modes, from Automatic to Manual to Snow Scene, and it just won't lock outside. It works fine inside, but not outside. I don't know if there's a setting that's keeping it from locking because it's too bright or what. If I focus outside and switch it to manual focus, it will fire. But the hexagon just flashes no matter what I do in auto-focus mode, even though it does auto-focus.

I'm not sure what to do, as I haven't changed any settings on it since I haven't used it for months.

Are you using center point focus, select a focus point or do you let the camera decide? I suggest that you use center point so you know where to aim.
Is there sufficient contrast in the scene? Try to find something in the scene with sufficient contrast in the () area.

It is likely not a focus issue, in auto-mode the camera will not allow you to trip the shutter if something such as the shutter exceed the max range - the camera should be flashing.
