Sounds like the thumbnail is intact but the actual file is damaged. You could try an sd card repair program.

First of all, I would suggest downloading them to your computer to save all your hard work. See if they work on your computer.

G'day Peter and welcome to PF, always good to have a fellow Aussie on board.
You will find lots of us DownUnder Pentaxians around here, where in Aus are you from.
Don't know how to help you, but I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

I may be able to later. I'm on my phone - I googled the topic a few weeks ago when my dad wiped a card and needed to recover some files. I have little experience with the tools myself.

Try Recuva (by Piriform). It's free. It has saved me once.

Before you try a repair, copy what you can to your computer.

As a matter of course you should always download your photos to your computer after every shoot, AND back them up to an external hard drive of some sort. You've taken the time to make those photos, so why risk losing them?

When you're satisfied all the photos have been downloaded safely, put the SD card back in the camera and format it.

It's not good practice to store your photos on your SD card; they fail. I'd also suggest you don't use big cards. All your eggs are going in one basket.

I would recommend not saving so many on the disc in the future to avoid problems.

It would be appreciated if you (in case you can find out what happend) add a short explanation to this thread.

The thumbs are embedded in the JPG or RAW files.
So, if the camera and/or computer can display them, it means the files as such can be read and their structure (independend from contents) is intact.

If just the JPG or RAW content itself is rubbish throughout a range of pictures, a hardware or firmware problem of the camera body is far more likely than a problem with the SD card.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum from another proud Aussie.
I have my photographs stored on my computer as well as two external hard drives, just to be sure!
I also down load and store after each shoot.
Hope you get your problem solved.
Regards.
