Sigma AF 28-70/2.8 with stiff focus ring

I bought a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DF autofucus lens last year and used it fine on my K200D and various film cameras.

I haven't used it for a few months and recently when I took it out of the cupboard I found the focus ring is very stiff below 0.6m (2 feet) - something seems to be rubbing internally. It wasn't like this before but hasn't been dropped or mistreated and there is no external damage.

I can manually focus (with difficulty) at this range but it's too stiff for an AF motor to handle. Can anyone suggest what might be the problem or how it might be fixed?I can't see any obvious way to open the front end of the lens.

Many thanks
