Repainting the Pentax K1000

Hello everyone! I've decided to repaint my Asahi Pentax K1000. Does anyone know what the camera is painted/plated with as a stock camera.

It may depend on how old your K1000 is. The earlier ones have metal top and bottom plates, and the later ones are plastic. May require different technique depending on which you have.

The original ones are a chromed metal of some kind (probably Aluminum substrate with a layer of zinc, then chrome)...
You mean sort of like this?

A tech at my local camera repair place was bored and buffed the chrome off a K1000.

Just to clarify, the camera is the older Asahi pentax- the all metal version. Do you think I should get a fine grit sand paper and take off the plating that way? Or should I chemically remove it?

I am trying to repaint the camera anthracite gray. From the reading I've done the chrome is too smooth to hold any paint, so having it be pure aluminum would be prefered. However if I'm wrong please tell me! I've never actually done this before!
