Repainting the Pentax K1000

Hello everyone! I've decided to repaint my Asahi Pentax K1000. Does anyone know what the camera is painted/plated with as a stock camera.

It may depend on how old your K1000 is. The earlier ones have metal top and bottom plates, and the later ones are plastic. May require different technique depending on which you have.

My ears are burning!

The original ones are a chromed metal of some kind (probably Aluminum substrate with a layer of zinc, then chrome). Be sure to use a self-etching primer prior to painting, or your paint is not going to stick at all.

You mean sort of like this?

A tech at my local camera repair place was bored and buffed the chrome off a K1000.

Just to clarify, the camera is the older Asahi pentax- the all metal version. Do you think I should get a fine grit sand paper and take off the plating that way? Or should I chemically remove it?

Are you trying to return it to the original look? If so, it will require electroplating, which really isn't worth it, since you could just buy a donor body and remove the top and bottom plates and put them on yours.

If you are trying to make it a different non-metallic color (e.g. black), simply paint over the chrome with a self-etching primer, then the paint of your choice.

If you are trying to get to bare metal, the best way would be sand/abrasive blasting or a vibratory tumbler. It's going to be very difficult to get all the nooks and crannies with just sandpaper.

You could use a strong acid or reverse electroplating, but you'd be dealing with some very dangerous chemicals.

I am trying to repaint the camera anthracite gray. From the reading I've done the chrome is too smooth to hold any paint, so having it be pure aluminum would be prefered. However if I'm wrong please tell me! I've never actually done this before!

If you can get it down to pure aluminum, the easiest way to get the look you are seeking might be to use Aluminum gun blacking:

And if you decide to paint, here is a helpful tutorial:

Note: painting ill make hte engravings in the metal less distinct.
