finding focus

Ive been photographing small birds - blue tits - flying in and out of birdshouses that I just recently put up. Got a few nice pics, but have a big problem finding the right focus. Using autofocus, it tends to jump a lot because there is a lot of small branches around so even using the centerfocus is very difficult. Ive been thinking of putting something up that could help me find the right focus manually. These are very quick birds so i have to be focused before they fly in. Anyone has some useful tip ? Using a smaller aperture together with a fast time puts the ISO up to much I think. Dont want that....Being a total noob, Im happy for any advice. /Mats ps Im using the K5 2 s and sigma 150-500 sometimes with tc 1.4. ds

Try focusing manually and use the catch-in-focus feature to capture the birds as they fly through the focus point.

Also you can try separating the focus from the shutter button and pre-focus ahead of time - see some discussion on this post here
