Have you tried using a different memory card?

There's a digital filter effect called inverted color. But if you've already tried a camera reset, that can't be the reason I suppose.

Welcome to the Pentax forums!

As Adam commented above, the most common cause of that sort of thing is a bad SD card.

color inversion

thanks to adam and others yes indeed it was an sd card problem merely removing and reinserting it restored normal operation, the card had been in the camera for a few years, goes to show how easy symptoms can obscure an easy remedy

The copper contacts on any circuit board with edge connectors can corrode, even while firmly mounted in the device. This is not limited to memory cards, which are really just small circuit boards. I once encountered a rack-mounted modem on an IBM mainframe that suddenly stopped working. We simply pulled it out, burnished the contacts with a pencil eraser and reinserted it. Everything worked just fine after that.

Copper is a good conductor of electricity, but copper oxide is not. The simple act of removing the card and replacing it scrapes enough copper-oxide off the contacts for it to work again.

They could use nickel-silver, which isn't much more expensive than copper, especially in the tiny quantities involved. Nickel-silver does oxidize, forming silver-oxide. The difference is that silver-oxide, unlike copper oxide, is a conductor. This would avoid the problem altogether, but electronics manufacturers have not adopted it.

BTW, if you ever try the eraser trick, use a pencil eraser, not an ink eraser. The pencil eraser will burnish it nicely, but is not rough enough to wear through the copper contacts. Furthermore, if you don't get all the eraser "dust" off, it shouldn't cause a problem because the rubber is a non-conductor. An ink eraser, on the other hand, can wear through the copper.
